‘Industrial Internet Centre of Excellence’ to come up in IITM

img8

May 17, 2016: IITM and GE recently signed an agreement to build the 'Industrial Internet Centre of Excellence' which aims to develop power intensive applications with first focus on creating a Digital Twin of Aluminium Smelter. The Industrial Internet Centre of Excellence marks a milestone global collaboration by GE to drive digital industrial transformation that can bring quantum leaps in productivity, efficiency and reliability to the industrial sector.

Aluminium smelters are essentially refineries for extracting aluminum from aluminium oxide, separating the aluminium from oxygen through a chemical reaction. Through the new Centre, GE and IIT Madras will create a Digital Twin of a smelter. The Twin is a living digital model that will continuously generate new data and insights about the smelter that allows operators to run the smelters more efficiently. For the aluminium smelter industry, the net gains through such productivity enhancement are valued at between US$50 to 150 million annually.

The agreement to set up the centre was signed between Mr. Azeez Mohammed, President & CEO, GE Power Services, Middle East & Africa and Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director of IIT Madras. Researchers and students of IIT Madras will work closely with the GE Global Research, GE Power Services Engineering and GE Digital teams at GE’s John F. Welch Technology Centre in Bangalore.

May 9, 2016: InnoNano Research (INR), a clean water technology company incubated at IIT Madras & co-founded by Prof. T. Pradeep, is set out to develop its global footprint by finalizing a $18 million investment plan with NanoHoldings(NH) an energy and water investment specialist firm, based in the US.

The company made the announcement in a special function held in the presence of many dignitaries and government officials from the Department of Science & Technology. Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras announced the finalizing of agreement with NanoHoldings (NH), to set-up a global water technology company. With an aim to make India an exporter of water technologies, and to support the Make in India efforts of the government, the company plans to setup a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, a modern research laboratory and technology delivery offices across North America, Asia and Africa.

INR is an 8 year old IIT Madras incubated start-up company, born out of the water technologies seeded at Professor Pradeep’s laboratories. The company was started with Anshup, an IIT Madras graduate in chemical engineering. Soon, Udhaya Shankar and Amrita Chaudhary joined. The team along with other research scholars and post-doctoral fellows developed a range of technologies to tackle diverse contaminants in drinking water, maintaining international quality standards. Prof. Satish Kailas of IISc acted as an advisor all through the difficult times. Inventors of the technology decided to take it to the most affected parts of the country. With commendable support from the Government and extraordinary assistance from implementation partners such as Mr. Praveen Poddar of Mahavir Pumps Pvt. Ltd., the technology is now serving 700+ locations across the country.

Nano Holdings, a US-based energy and water investment specialist firm has supported global patenting activity for the team and IIT Madras for the past 4 years. “These technologies are destined to change the world in a significant way” said Justin Hall-Tipping, CEO of NH.
